CITY OF KUOPIO

The Kuopio region is situated in central Finland, in the verdant province of North Savo, which is interspersed with thousands of lakes.

The backdrop for the summer atmosphere in the Kuopio region is provided by lakes and islands, great to explore on boat cruises, as well as by the landscape of forest-covered hills. Boating, hiking and other forms of outdoor recreation are really spoilt for choice here. The region also boasts a wide variety of cultural activities and events. The lakes, which abound with fish, guarantee good catches throughout the year. Leisure spas with their bubbling pools and baths offer relaxation and invigoration whenever you feel the need.

How to reach Kuopio

By flight: connections are excellent as there is 5-10 daily flight from capital Helsinki.
Kuopio airport (www.finavia.fi/airport_kuopio) is 16 km from the city. A regular bus service is available from the airport to city centre.

By train: There are several trains daily from Helsinki to Kuopio and the journey only takes a few hours. The train station is located in the city centre within 20 minutes walk from the hotels.

By car: Kuopio is situated by one of the arterial roads of the country, highway 5 leading from Helsinki to Lapland. The Kuopio region can also be reached by bus.

TRANSPORTATION WITHIN THE CITY

There is a bus transfer organized between the congress venue and the official hotels of the symposium. Kuopio also has a very efficient public transportation system that services the entire city.

BANKING & EXCHANGE

Foreign currency may be exchanged at banks during normal banking hours and at hotels. All major credit cards are accepted in hotels, most restaurants and shops. Automated bank machines are available at many points throughout the city.

CLIMATE

Finland has a climate that is transitional between maritime and continental. Summers are warm and bright, temperatures ranging from a cool 59F (15C) up to a hot 86F (30C) in the warmest month of July. Days are long and sunny, with up to 19 hours of daylight. Towards the end of September temperatures cool down drastically as days grow shorter, and by November the weather is at freezing point as the cold, snowy winter sets in.

The local standard time zone in Kuopio is Greenwich Mean Time GMT +2 hour. Finland uses summer time and daylight saving time is +1 hour.
