Heikki Pekkarinen Memorial Award
Young scientists are encouraged to compete for the 8th Martti J. Karvonen Young Investigator Award. Investigators aged 40 years or less, and who hold an academic (or comparable) rank below associate professor are eligible.
Applicants need to send to The Puijo Symposium Secretariat:
* a curriculum vitae
* an abstract
* a short manuscript, (max. 1500 words including tables, figures and references) in electronic format
Deadline for applications is December 15, 2013.
An international review panel will select three finalists, who will give their presentation during the symposium. The same panel will also judge the presentations. The three finalists will be informed of the outcome of the review process. Please note, these three presentations selected for the final will not be eligible to The Ralph S. Paffenbarger Jr. Poster Award. Special attention will be paid when the candidate's native language is not English.
The finalists will be awarded as follows:

Third 500 EUR
The panel may also decide not to deliver one or more prizes.

Participants of The Puijo Symposium are invited to compete for The Ralph S. Paffenbarger Jr. Poster Award. Each poster presentation will be eligible. Applicants willing to participate are asked to send a copy of their poster presentation in an electronic form to The Puijo Symposium Secretariat. An international review panel will select during The Symposium three finalists, who will make an oral presentation during the symposium.
Deadline for submission of abstracts is December 15, 2013.

Posters will be presented during the symposium as a non-stop presentation on three screens size 42" (aspect ratio 16:9). Please notice, that layouts in landscape orientation work best on screen! Abstracts and posters should be sent to Puijo Symposium Secretariat as a good quality JPG file as well as a PowerPoint file. Also PDF is accepted.
There won't be traditional poster exhibition on Symposium – paper posters will be not needed.
The organizers will enlarge on your abstract (A4 size), which will be placed on the tables next to the screens. Please note, the three best posters will be presented also orally on Friday followed by the pricing ceremony.

Heikki Pekkarinen Memorial Award will be delivered for the second time in the International 21st Puijo Symposium. The Award is to honour Heikki's pioneering and extensive commitment in developing both the substance as well as modern teaching methods in health sciences.
You are eligible for the Heikki Pekkarinen Memorial Award if:
* you are a registered PhD student in health sciences (including exercise medicine, exercise sciences, nutrition sciences, medicine) in a university in Finland or
* you have completed your PhD dissertation in health sciences no more than three years previously, and
* you have submitted an abstract of your study to be presented at The International 22st Puijo Symposium.
The applications for the Award has to be submitted in electronical form by the date which will be informed later to: puijo.symposium@uef.fi. You may include any material you think will be relevant to support your application. In addition, you are asked to attach any published material related to your abstract. A six-member panel with representatives from The Foundation for Research in Health Exercise and Nutrition, from The University of Eastern Finland, from The University of Jyväskylä, and from the University of Oulu, will select the awardee.
